SYNOPSIS: Flags of the Arab League flew outside the Palace of Nations in Algiers lats Saturday, as ministers and senior officials of Arab countries gathered for a four-day conference on the problems of youth in the Arab world.
In all, delegates from 20 Arab countries were on hand for the opening cession of the conference, the second such meeting of its kind.
The first conference on youth was held in Cairo in 1969. Among the topics discussed at this year's conference were the character of Arab youth, ways of strengthening the organisation of young Palestinians, and a report from the Arab League-Secretariat on progress attained in these fields since the first conference. One task of the first meeting was to split the delegates into commissions to discuss and make recommendations on various points included in the conference agenda. Final recommendations were scheduled to be adopted by the conference on the last day of the meeting. The second conference on Arab youth was opened by Algeria's Youth and Sports Minister, Mr Abdallah Fadel, who was later elected conference chairman.
Speaking on behalf of President Houari Boumedienne, Mr Fadel stressed the need for increased cooperation between Arab nations to improve education and training facilities.
Also speaking at the opening session was Mr Ahmed Sayab, Secretary General of the Arab League. The conference will be followed by a week-long Arab youth festival, to be attended by over 2,000 young people. The festival coincides with the tenth anniversary of Algeria's independence.
