- Story Text: After his firm declaration against the location of foreign bases along the shores of the Mediterranean at an official dinner earlier this week, President Houari Boumedienne of Algeria had friendlier words for Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin later in the week.
At an official dinner before the departure of the Soviet leader for an official visit to Morocco, President Boumedienne spoke of the solid ties of friendship and co-operation between Algiers and Moscow. He went on to reveal that the private talks between the two leaders had achieved excellent results.
On Wednesday, the two men had flown to El Hadjar in a Soviet built IL 18 aircraft to visit the new steel plant and to meet the workers. This visit turned into a full State occasion as the Algerian President and the Russian Prime Minister were given full honours at the airport and then headed a motorcade into the town.
At the Steel Plant, President Boumedienne acted as the host to his Russian guest during a complete tour of the works. The following day, Prime Minister Kosygin and his party drove out of Algiers to tour the laboratories and research works at the Boumerdes Textile Institute and to meet some of the Russian professors assisting in the research work.
SYNOPSIS: A special aircraft flew Algerian President Houari Boumedienne and his guest Mr. Alexi Kosygin the Prime Minister of the Soviet Union from Algiers to El Hadjar on Wednesday, so that the Soviet leader could inspect an iron and steel plant at Annaba which had been built with Russian assistance.
The two leaders frove from the airport in a motorcade which was accorded an enthusiastic welcome by crowds lining the streets.
The two leaders later walked through the crowd.
It was an opportunity for him to meet some of the miners at the steel plant, According to journalists in Algiers, the decision of President Boumedienne to accompany the Soviet visitor was a gesture rarely accorded visiting leaders.
Mr. Kosygin was given a complete tour of the plant which incorporates many of the latest techniques and process. There was an opportunity for him to sign the visitors book on what proved to be a state occasion.
Later the two leaders visited the laboratories and research department of a large Algerian textile factory at Bourmedes. Among its staff are several Russian professors who are assisting in research and development processes.
After the day(s touring President Boumedienne was to speak, at a farewell banquet for Mr. Kosygin, of the solid ties of friendship and co-operation between Algiers and Moscow.
