Amateurs film makers from across Lithuania have received a brand new mobile phone to shoot a movie for the Mobilaxx Film Festival competition.
Earlier this month, 20 wannabe film makers received a Nokia 93i mobile phone with an integrated camera to enable them to shoot a film using just the mobile phone.
All 20 finalists were chosen from over 100 applicants who registered for the competition.
"This Festival is the equivalent of an entry level to a film school. I believe that movies can be done with mobile phones. The main thing is to have an idea and story whereas the technical aspect of making it is not as important," organiser Mindaugas Vosylius said.
Far from the high budget Hollywood blockbusters, participants get creative very quickly to be able to deliver their finished masterpieces in just a few weeks and with next to no budget.
Student Tomas Vidmantas decided to shoot a comedy with professional actors from the local theatre and has even made a tripod for his mobile phone to improve the quality of his footage.
"I have participated in various film festivals before and it's not important which device I use for making my films, a camera or a mobile phone. The main aim is to deliver a film idea for the viewer," Vidmantas said.
By contrast, participant Aura Maknyte decided to make a documentary about feelings in a massage parlour in Vilnius where the masseuses are blind.
"I am shooting a documentary about feelings and a mobile phone with an integrated camera is the ideal tool for this, because a mobile phone is almost invisible to the people I am filming. It does not influence the relationships between these people on location," Maknyte said.
Each movie maker will have to produce a three minute long film by April 2nd and the winner of the competition will be announced in May 2007. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
