- Story Text: Some of the world's top eaters gathered in Singapore on Sunday (May 09) to participate in the world's first shrimp wonton eating competition.
Top ranked American, Joey Chestnut beat out world number two Takeru Kobayashi from Japan by gobbling up 380 of the Asian delights in eight minutes. Rival Kobayashi devoured 370.
"It was great. It was great to get back to Singapore. Two years ago Kobayashi beat me eating chicken satay so I really wanted to come back here and beat him. The wontons tasted great and they were pretty easy to down," said Chestnut just after winning the contest.
Kobayashi said he was not discouraged by the loss.
"I lost the contest but I had a good pace at the beginning and if I had kept that pace I would have won. I want to work harder and be stronger," he said.
Chestnut and Kobayashi will face off again in Los Angeles for a pizza eating competition and again on July 04 for the world famous Nathan's hotdog eating competition.
In the women's competition, 44-year-old Juliet Lee of China, swallowed a whopping 150 shrimp wontons.
The closest local competitor to the champions was able to ingest slightly over 110 pieces of the classic dim sum dish. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
