  • Story Text: Veteran film composer James Horner has been completing the score for the new Robin Williams fantasy movie, "Jumanji", due out at Christmas in the United States.
    "Jumanji" is the fantasy story about a man (Williams) who is trapped inside a children's board game for many years before being released into our world. But when he escapes, he brings with him the dangerous denizens of the game.
    The film co-stars Bonnie Hunt and Kirsten Dunst. It's directed by Joe Johnston, who directed "The Rocketeer" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." "Jumanji" has about 70 minutes of Horner's music, which was added after the film was edited, in a week-long process. The music was recorded during a scoring session with a 108-piece orchestra, which played the score under Horner's direction. Sequences from the film projected on a big screen had white vertical lines and circles superimposed on them to help with the timing of the music.
    After the scoring session, Horner explained, the recording is mixed to make sure the music is properly balanced, transferred to the film and blended with the dialogue and sound effects.
    "Ultimately, the score has to be a manipulation tool," Horner said, "sometimes the director has a vision of what he wants to happen, but somehow on screen it's not happening and the music can nudge the audience psychologically more in that direction".
    James Horner is the veteran of dozens of films, most recently including "Casper," "Apollo 13," and "Braveheart." He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for "Legends of the Fall," and was nominated for Oscars for the films "Field of Dreams," "Aliens," and "An American Tail."
