Summary:On the morning of November 30 1939, Soviet aircraft attacked Helsinki and other Finnish towns. At the same time Soviet warships bombarded Finnish defences and the Red Army crossed the border at Petsamo. It was the start of a war in which Soviet forces were dealt a severe lesson by their tiny neighbours. Despite these air attacks, the Finns rallied and inflicted heavy losses on the Russian armed forces during a five-month war.
