- Story Text: Communist guerrilla have killed 40 Thai troops and wounded about 100 others since military operations began in Northern Thailand earlier this year. Lieutenant General Samran Jeedyakul, commander of the regional Third Army, told a field press conference in Lomsak on Wednesday (22 March) that his forces had killed on captured about five of the gorilla and more than 60 of their supporters.
Among the weapons the Thai troops had captured from the guerrillas were Russian and Chinese-made AK-40 guns, FRG rockets and landmines. the commander described the districts around Lomsak as guerrilla-infosted areas and added that harassment who continuing.
Lieutenant General Samran Daedyakul's press conference was held just before Thailand's Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn warned communist elements that his country was prepared for any kind of rocket attacks like those which hit the Khmor capital of Phnom Penh on Monday (21 March).
Further north of Lomsak, the Thai Army is stopping up its campaign against communist forces. Their job is being made more difficult by the guerrilla harassment, and by the rugged terrain in the area. Wednesday was the first time newsmen had been allowed to visit the arca.
