Summary:December 1939 - a glimpse of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. At this time, he had been leader of Cuba for six years and was generally regarded as a progressive and enlightened president. He had led the so-called 'sergeant's revolt' against the previous Cuban regime and assumed power on a wave of popular approval. He left office in 1944 and returned in 1952 - but in his second term, proved a brutally repressive dictator.
