  • Story Text: The half-naked corpses of resistance leader Ange Diawara and II of his supporters, killed last Monday (23 April) by Congolese government forces, were put on public display in Brazzaville's Revolutionary Stadium on Tuesday (24 April).

    Government troops killed the guerrillas, including Diawara's Deputy Ikoko Jean Baptiste, at Boko about 75 miles (120 kilometres) south of the capital and also on the Congo-Zaire frontier. They had been pursued by government forces ever since they staged an abortive coup against Congo's President, Marian Ngouabi, last year.

    Following the capture of the guerrillas, President Ngouabi issued a statement saying that was how all "military-fascist adventures" who wished to take power by force would perish. The President said he was ready to resign, along with the leaders of the ruling Congolese Worker's Party, if that was the demand of the people. But, he added, military or civil demagogues like Diawara would never take power in Brazzaville.

    SYNOPSIS: From the Congolese Army headquarters in Brazzaville on Tuesday, a truck, carrying the dead bodies of twelve guerrillas, made its way to the capital's Revolutionary Stadium.

    Crowds of people went to see the dead guerrillas, who had been pursued by government troops ever since they staged an abortive coup last year against Congo's President, Marien Ngouabi.

    Among the dead bodies displayed in the centre of Brazzaville's main stadium was that of Ange Diawara, a former lieutenant, and leader of the resistance group. He and eleven of his supporters were killed at Boko about 75 miles south of Brazzaville on Monday, the day before the bodies were displayed.

    As the bodies left the stadium, President Ngouabi issued a statement saying that this was how all "military-fascist adventurers" who wished to take power by force would perish.
