- Story Text: Immigration check step up at Karachi airport after
copies of London bombers' passports reveal the attackers
travelled to the country last year.
Immigration officials on Tuesday (July 19) imposed
rigorous checks on passports and travel documents at
Pakistan's Karachi airport, a day after copies of some of
the London bombers' passports revealed travels to the
country.
Three of the suicide bombers involved in the July 7
London attacks entered Pakistan through Karachi last year,
immigration officials told Reuters on Monday (July 18).
They were young British Muslims Shehzad Tanweer, 22,
Mohammad Sidique Khan, 31 and Hasib Hussain, 18.
An immigration official said Shehzad and Sidique
visited Karachi in November last year, and went back to
London in February.
A Pakistani newspaper, the Daily News, reported that
the two had stayed at a hotel in Karachi's central Saddar
area for a week before leaving for Lahore by train.
Computer records show a Hasib Hussain entered Karachi
from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on July 15, 2004. No data was
available regarding his departure.
Copies of the three men's British passports bore
photographs bearing strong likenesses to those already
widely published.
Pakistani security agencies have detained several
suspected militants since the London bombings, but have so
far failed to establish links between them and the attacks
in Britain.
