Summary:At the outset of World War II the battleship Graf Spee was a serious menace to Allied shipping and the British navy developed a large force to stop her. After a series of long-range battles, the German ship took refuge in Montevideo. Then on December 13 1939 she sailed, only to catch fire and sink. The truth was that the Graf Spee's captain, Hans Langsdorff, had been ordered to scuttle the 10,000-ton battleship rather than fight.
