- Story Text: Legendary record producer and head of BMG U.S. Clive Davis throws his annual pre-Grammy party in Beverly Hills the night before the music industry's biggest night. American Idols finalist and "Dreamgirls" star Jennifer Hudson and Grammy nominees Christina Aguilera and Pink performed for the more than 800 party guests at the Beverly Hilton.
Some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry gathered in Beverly Hills on Saturday (February 10, 2007) night for the pre-Grammy party thrown each year by recording industry giant, Clive Davis. His special guest was Whitney Houston. But the U.S. head of BMG invited more than 800 other guests to his annual soiree at the Beverly Hilton, from actresses Ellen De Generes and Portia De Rossi, to Vice President Al Gore, to Grammy nominees John Mayer and Mary J. Blige.
"Clive is, how can I say it? He is the music business," said Mary J. Blige. "And he's the reason why so many of us have staying power because everyone that he's ever taken under his wing from Aretha Franklin on down is, is still around and is still holding strong."
Other attendees had more praise for a man they consider to be their biggest supporter and the person responsible for their individual successes in the music industry -- from the veterans to the newcomers.
"He's responsible for all of these people's success here," said music mainstay Barry Manilow. "Here's Chris going by, here's Pink going by. And there's me. I mean without Clive I wouldn't be here. But this party tonight is like family. It really is. Like Lorna say, it's family. No one, no one's worried about winning a Grammy or losing a Grammy. It, just everybody having a good time."
American Idol finalist Katharine McPhee agrees.
"Well, it's so exciting to be here for Clive, you know, I mean especially just cause he's done so much for me so far," she said. "It's like I've only known him for like six months or something. I just, he's um, he's just amazing. You know and now here he has the best party of all of them, so I'm happy to be at this one."
Meanwhile, the man himself says finding great talent is still what drives him.
"Simple. It's the thrill of discovery," he explained. "The thrill of established artists getting more, whether it be Carlos Santana or Aretha or Luther. Uh, Rod Stewart and Barry soaring higher."
American Idol finalist and Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson performed, along with Grammy nominees Christina Aguilera and Pink.
R&B great Smokey Robinson filled in for Justin Timberlake, who had to skip the party because he was feeling under the weather. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
