- Story Text: Colombian crooner Juanes, one of the biggest stars
in the Spanish speaking world, has announced that he will
be taking part in a movie with Jennifer Lpez and Antonio
Banderas about the murder of women in Mexicos Juarez City.
"There is an invitation to do a movie now. Its about
the slaughter of the women in Juarez City, which I thought
was a really interesting subject. I dont know who the
director is, but Jennifer Lopez and Antonio Banderas are
there in the movie. We are going to do it, I think, on
Thursday or Friday in Albuquerque and my participation is
basically as Juanes and Im singing at a party. I dont yet
know the role exactly," the singer told journalists in
Bogota Colombia, where he was opening the new headquarters
of Radio Caracol.
More than 340 women, most of them young women and
girls, have been killed in Juarez City, which borders with
the United States, in the last 12 years, in what Amnesty
International considers one of the worst human rights
problems in Mexico.
"Its a very tragic, very difficult story that has been
going on for a long time. And its mysterious. Every month
without fail murdered, raped women appear in the desert,"
said Juanes.
The Mexican authorities have arrested and imprisoned a
number of people in connection with the crimes, but the
deaths continue and doubts remain that all those
responsible have been brought to justice.
The 32-year-old singer, whose hits include "A Dios le
pido" (I Ask God), "La camisa negra" (The Black Shirt),
"Volverte a Ver" (To See You Again), and "Nada valgo sin tu
amor" (I Am Nothing Without Your Love), said he will be
joining a campaign by the United Nations High Commissin
for Refugees to help those displaced by Colombias internal
conflict.
Juanes said he would continue his tour until March
2006, after which he planned a long rest before bringing
out his next album, which he is already working on. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
