  • Story Text: Artists Christo and Jeanne Claude continued on Tuesday (June 20) swathing the outer walls of Germany's historic Reichstag building in silver fabric.

    The project, narrowly approved by the German parliament after a 70-minute debate, has been accompanied by controversy ever since Christo and his wife Jeanne Claude first thought of wrapping the building in 1971.

    Christo's team of 90 professional climbers are unfurling the vast fabric panels down the north and south walls of the Reichstag building.

    The team starts working at dawn to make use of the entire day.

    Christo and Jeanne Claude borrowed 7-million United States (U.S.) dollars from banks to pay for the project and lost out when the dollar fell against the mark.

    They have made a point of not accepting any private sponsorship or government subsidy.

    Once completed on June 23, the project will remain in place until July 6.
