- Story Text: Thousands of Italians take part in a candlelit
procession as a mark of respect for those killed in the
school siege in Russia.
In silence and lit by the candles they all held,
thousands of Italians took part in a solemn procession
through the streets of central Rome on Monday evening
(September 6, 2004) as a mark of respect for those killed in the
school seige in Beslan, Russia.
People of all ages and all religions took part in the
night of condolence procession organised by Rome's mayor
leaving from the town hall and ending at the colosseum. The
march had been called as a sign of respect to the some 335
dead, killed by Chechen separatists, over half of them
children.
"I'm here because I think it is important for all the
children who are dead," said 7-year-old Rocco Baldini
holding his candle.
"I'm here to show my solidarity against this
indiscriminate violence, for all the innocent children who
died," said grandmother Giuseppina Brovetani. "The most
pure things in the world are children, it was a massacre,
something absolutely inhumane. I can't even think of a
human mind that could think of such a thing, we are here
to ask why" Brovetani said.
