- Story Text: Fifteen Serbian opposition parties formally chose
Vojislav Kostunica to be their presidential candidate against
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
Representatives from 15 opposition parties met in
Belgrade on Monday (August 7) to name Vojislav Kostunica as
their joint candidate in the upcoming elections.
Dusan Mihajlovic, leader of the New Democracy party,
told reporters the decision had been made unanimously.
Vojislav Kostunica, the leader of the Democratic Party
of Serbia said that he hopes to meet the demands and
expectations of the public.
The appointment came after the country's biggest
opposition party, the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO),
nominated its own rival candidate on Sunday. He is Belgrade
mayor Vojislav Mihajlovic, who other opposition leaders fear
could end up splitting the anti-Milosevic vote.
