- Story Text: Conservative social Democratic Centre Party leader Diogo Freitas do Amaral attacked the recent takeover of farms by workers' cooperatives at a party rally in Rio Maior, near Lisbon on Monday (8 December).
He and fellow speaker General Carlos Galvao de Melo called for the farms to be returned to their owners. They also for the exclusions of young left wing foreigners who have been working on the cooperatives.
Since the failure of the dissident solders extreme left-wing coup in Lisbon a fortnight ago Portugal shows signs of moving slowly to the right. Many left wing publications, have been stopped and a new disciplinarian chief of Staff of the Army has been appointed - General Ramalho Eanes.
Many officers identified with the coup are now under arrest or purged from their commands and the Portuguese Communist Party has been holding many propaganda sessions to try to rally its supporters.
The CDS admit it is pleased by the Communist Party's recent fall from grace and there was news of further muddle in the country's centre-left coalition government during the day. Spacial Affairs Minister Jorge Sa borges resigned from the country's second largest party The Centrist Popular Democrat. His resignation is believed to be because of what the left wing of the PPD considers as party leader Dr. Fransisco So Carneiro's authoritarianism.
