- Story Text: China's only slam-dunking, trumpet-blowing panda has
been wowing audiences in Beijing. Ying Ying, one of the
members of an endangered species, has been training since he
was two years old.
China's most eye-catching bicycle-riding basketball
player is Ying Ying, the star of the Chinese Acrobatics Arts
Festival in Beijing at the weekend (October 20-21, 2001).
As a member of one of the world's most endangered species,
the use of a panda in such perfomances will cause
understandable concern in the animal rights lobby.
But, Ying Ying's handlers insist that he thoroughly enjoys
himelf during all his stunts.
According to his trainer, Ying Ying sometimes does not feel
like performing and on these days does nothing but lie about
in his cage.
The 17-year-old is a natural show-off and despite carrying
a little weight around the middle, he also enjoys basketball
and even weight lifting.
Born into captivity in 1984 in the provbince of Sichuan in
south-west China, Ying Ying's talents were apparently obvious
from his earliest days when he joined a troupe of acrobatics
at the age of two and since then has forged a career
entertaining the masses and winning a string of awards.
