- Story Text: Yugoslavia's government and opposition parties have
begun issuing preliminary results based on the small number of
results so far declared at the polling stations. Both sides
claim they are leading.
Cedomir Jovanovic, a spokesman for the Democratic
Opposition of Serbia bloc grouping 18 political parties and
one trade union, said Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic
had 33
percent of the votes.
Earlier, Milosevic's ruling Socialist Party said some
hours after polls closed at 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) that the
president had a strong lead over Kostunica. Milosevic had
trailed well behind him in independent pre-election opinion
surveys.
According to the Socialists Milosevic, led Kostunica by
50.28 percent over 30.76 percent, based on preliminary data
from around 300 of 10,000 polling stations across Yugoslavia.
The ultra-nationalist Radical Party, once a member of
Milosevic's ruling coalition but now estranged from it,
complaining of unfair treatment, put Kostunica ahead, by 49.5
percent to 40.44 percent with more than 600,000 ballots counted.
