- Story Text: Tens of thousands of party-goers have attended the
final hours of the world-famous Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
Fun-seekers continued to parade through the streets
of Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday (February 27) even as Carnival
was officially coming to an end.
People dressed in colourful costumes danced in street
processions to the sounds of drums on the fifth and final day
of the pre-Lenten festival.
While the major festivities wrapped up shortly after the
sun rose on Tuesday, Brazil's second-tier samba schools
rumbled on giant floats down the Sambadrome - a 700-yard
(meter)-long avenue lined with spectator stands - for the
final night of the fanciful parades.
Thousands of members of the Gay and Lesbian community,
also joined in the festivities, holding their official "Gay
Gala."
Brazil's five days of pre-Lenten dancing, singing, sex and
drinking kicked off on Friday (February 23). In Rio, the
famously fat King Momo, weighing in at 300 pounds (135 kg)
reigned over the party that will officially end on Wednesday
(February 28) when the winners of the showcase parades are
announced.
According to organizers, this year Rio's Carnival promised
to be the biggest ever in terms of visitors. They expected
some 336,000 tourists, many of whom paraded at the Sambadrome
after buying costumes that ranged in price from $75 to
$15,000.
