- Story Text: Tyler Perry's latest film venture, "For Colored Girls," is far removed from the comedic fare for which he first gained fame. The film, which stars Janet Jackson, tackles issues such as abuse and abortion, and is adapted from poet and playwright Ntozake Shange's "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf."
The film intertwines the stories of nine modern black women facing trials in their everyday lives.
Jackson said she was able to relate to her character, a well-to-do business woman whose personal life is on shaky ground.
"There were certain similarities. Being someone that has this wall up, she would engulf herself in her work to suppress what was going on in her personal life, her relationship with her husband, as well as with herself, and her work was her baby and that's how she was able to get through each and every day. That used to be me. That was definitely me," said Jackson.
In addition to Jackson, the film features a long roster of high-profile female actors including Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Kerry Washington, Thandie Newton and Macy Gray. But Jackson said just because the leading ladies happen to all be black, don't think of it as a black film - it's a just a film about women.
"I don't think it's specifically for women of color; I think it's for all women. You're talking about issues that still are relevant today and not just in black communities, but all communities, all walks of life."
Early critical reaction to the movie has been mixed. Audiences can judge for themselves when "For Colored Girls" hits theaters on Friday, November 05. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
