Summary:On May 10 1940 the eight-month hiatus which epitomised the start of World War II in Europe was abruptly ended when Hitler's armies unleashed their blitzkrieg strike through Belgium and northern France. In Belgium, the speed and power of the German advance swept all resistance aside exposing the unreadiness of the Belgian and British and later the French armies. They retreated and thousands and thousands of refugees went with them.
