Summary:On May 27 1940 the British army faced complete defeat and Nazi Germany had the conquest of all Europe within its grasp. The entire British army, sent to help Belgium and France, was trapped with its back to the sea. The place was a French Channel port, the name of which was to go into the English language as a symbol of how to turn disaster into a kind of victory. The miracle of Dunkirk was the skill with which a fleet of small ships, ranging from naval destroyers down to small pleasure yachts, was deployed to snatch more than one-third of a million men from the beaches and enable Britain to stay in the war. Under continual air attack, the famous fleet of little boats ferried the army across the English Channel to safety.
