- Story Text: Cirque Du Soleil's Varekai is wowing audiences in Bogota, Colombia, more than 10 years after the captivating show first opened in Montreal, Canada in 2002.
The adventurous show officially opened here on March 21 and has toured more than 68 cities in 18 countries across the globe, dazzling audiences with colourful high-flying acrobatic, gymnastic and musical acts.
According to the touring company, Varekai has been seen by more than 8 million people since it first opened in Canada.
The crew, approximately 170 people from 26 different countries, live much the life of Varekai's main character, Icarus, who finds himself in an unknown world with the desire for life that leads to an incredible adventure.
"Varekai is a show that actually tells a story about an Icarus that falls from the sky. When he falls from the sky, he enters in this kind of forest, magical forest, and then he meets a lot of people there. They are all creatures. Then, there, he has to learn how to move his legs for the first time and, in that process he finds love, he finds happiness, he finds sadness," the advertising director for the show, Cynthia Clemente said.
Varekai means 'wherever' in the Romany language of the gypsies, who the show's producers call, "the universal wanderers."
The show, written and directed by Dominic Champagne, is a testament to the nomadic spirit and the art of the circus tradition and to those who take the unknown path which often leads to unknown places.
Varekai is a crowd pleaser, featuring astonishing feats from aerial straps, juggling, net flying, aerial hoops, fascinating dancing acts and the triple trapeze all performed with the unmistakable flare that has become synonymous to Cirque Du Soleil.
"Excellent. It is a one-of-a-kind show: very colourful, the whole coordination thing, the flexibility. All around, it is an excellent show," said audience member Jorge Villa.
Varekai will be in Bogota until April 7 when the tour group will head to San Jose, Costa Rica. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
