- Story Text: Chocolate exhibitors have been flocking to New York City with the sweet smell of success in their heads. The annual chocolate show is packed with chocolate candy, sculptures, lessons, and fashion. It's a sight to behold and taste.
Models dressed in finery paraded down the runway at the New York Chocolate show on Thursday (November 15, 2001).
Designers combined the finest fabrics with the finest chocolate to serve up the most luscious of outfits. Wedding gowns, chocolate sailor suits, and out of this world dresses drizzled in white and dark chocolate were the rage of the day.
For some of the models it was a walk on the wild side.
"The is the first time I've been dressed in chocolate but it's a good idea and very genuine and not every day does one dress up as an anchor with a fish as a handbag."
Designer Martin Howard felt it was his patriotic duty to come up with a space like dress. "Well just thought we needed a little patriotic theme so I call this the choco-doodle dandy dress. It's a kind of cross between Judy Jetson and Uncle Sam."
The four day festival draws chocoholics from all over the world. Chocolate sellers and seekers crowd a downtown Manhattan showroom to see and taste the latest in chocolate.
This year chocolate trend is healthy hedonism. One booth displays organic confections, another sells products full of protein, and yet another has some of the most sumptuous sugar free chocolate to be found.
But for Patti Cohen-Hecht it's all or nothing. Her candies are as wild as chocolate covered potato chips and apples covered with inch of candy coatings.
"It makes you happy, I mean, it raises your endorphins.
It's like sex but better. Cause you can do it alone, but I guess you can do that alone anyway. But it's wonderful," said Patti.
Normally exhibitors from around the world flock to New York to display their latest creations. This year after the events of September 11th at the World Trade Center many European chocolatiers pulled out of the show. But others were determined to keep business going. In fact many made designs featuring American images. From firefighters to American flags, symbols of the Yankee patriotism decorated products at the show.
Chef Francoise Payard still features his "New York" cake.
He began making the pastry four years ago. Cakes are silk-screened with New York's old skyline-one-the World Trade Center is in the forefront. He is now selling the "New York"
cakes and all proceeds go to charity.
"Francoise four years ago decided to make a cake. It's got cream cheese mousse, blueberries and lemon on top, lemon glaze on top. It's light and wonderful and we sell a lot of them. So we decided it would be a great way to generate revenue for the victim relief for charities," said Jeffery Zurofsky of Payard Patisseries.
This year's Chocolate show attendees will have the opportunity to sample dozens of chocolate creations. For young and old alike the event is a Willy Wonka dream come true if only for an afternoon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
