- Story Text: Colombian comedian Jose Ordonez set a new Guinness World Record on Monday (December 8) by telling jokes for 86 consecutive hours.
He entertained the audience inside Bogota's Salitre Plaza mall from 8am (1300GMT) Friday (December 5) to Monday night.
Guinness allotted Ordonez five minutes of rest for every hour telling jokes, which he could accumulate and use however he chose.
Ordonez also had a personal doctor present to monitor his well-being given that the task involved prolonged insomnia of almost three days.
At 46, the comedian has now beaten ten world records for telling jokes, having advanced from 24 hours of joke-telling in 1993, and reaching 80 hours two years ago in Madrid, Spain.
Ordonez explained that he had many motivations for taking on the challenge. Amongst them he cited paying his rent, paying for his car and supporting his four children.
Beyond this, however, the event was carried out to raise money for the Colombianitos Foundation, in support of children displaced by violence in the country.
According to the head producer of the event, Angel Ayllon, the event raised not only raised money for charity, but its content was also important in bringing happiness to the country at a time of great difficulty.
"We are very happy, we feel very honoured to have contributed to peace in Colombia by offering our country at least three days of smiles," said Ayllon.
"We have also managed to raise millions of pesos for our foundation to help children. It has all been a great success, above all given that this country needs to laugh, in the middle of so many difficulties and so much violence among everything else," Ayllon added.
Ligia Ortiz, a member of the audience, said she enjoyed it.
"Marvellous, I am speechless, this is priceless. Firstly I want to give thanks to the All-Powerful for having given him (Jose Ordonez) life, health, license to take up the challenge, and that all of us should be able to participate in this cause. Congratulations Jose," said Ortiz. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
