- Story Text: An air and sea search for survivors form the Greek troop carrying ship, Merlin, has been called off. The Merlin Sank yesterday (Nov. 15) after a collision with the Super tanker, World Hero, owned by Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarcos. The collision occurred off Piraeus in a calm sea snd fine weather, but the Merlin sank within minutes and it's believed forty-four officers and men on board died. Only fourteen of her crew were rescued. Greek authorities have confiscated the tanker's papers, and warned her to stay at Pieraeus while investigations continues.
SYNOPSIS: The Gulf of Saronic where tragedy struck for the second time in weeks. Last month an airliner crashed here. On Wednesday forty-four naval officers and men were drowned when their troop carrier, Airline, collided with the super-tanker, World Hero.
The collision happened in clam seas and fine weather, but he Merlin sank within minutes and many of those lost were trapped inside as the ship turned over. Only fourteen of the navy crew were rescued. An air and sea search was mounted, but has now been called off. There were no reports of injuries on board the tanker.
The World Hero, which is owned by Greek shipping magnate, Stavros Niarcos, has been ordered to stay at Piraeus and her papers have been confiscated by the authorities
