- Story Text: Ghana's Head of State Colonel Ignatius Acheampong on Wednesday (25 April) launched a new highway as part of a development scheme to modernise the Nima and Maamobi areas of Accra, the capital.
At an official ceremony, Colonel Achemapong cut the first sod of the Nima Highway and the chief fetish priest of Accra poured a libation on the ground as an offering to the gods of Nima.
The highway, which, it is hoped, will ease the traffic congestion of this area is the first part of a large-scale development scheme being undertaken by the Nima/Maamobi Development Committee. Under the scheme modern blocks of flats, health clinics, schools, streets, shops, recreational parks and playgrounds will be built, transforming an areas described by Colonel Acheampong as 'a blot on the prestige of Accra' to a modern thriving suburb.
In the course of the ceremony Colonel Acheampong called on private Ghanaian businessmen to form housing syndicates in order to supplement the Government's efforts. However, he warned that his Government would not ??? business speculators who were only interested in making quick profits at the expense of the people'.
SYNOPSIS: At Accra, on Wednesday, Ghanaian Head of State Colonel Ignatius Acheampong launched a new highway.
The highway construction is the start of a redevelopment scheme for the Nima area of Accra. The chief fetish priest of Accra began the ceremonies by performing a libation to the gods of Nima. Then Colonel Acheampong initiated the highway by cutting the first sod. The Colonel thanked the Christian Organisation 'Operation Help Nima' for supplying volunteers. He also thanked members of the Nima/Maamobi development Committee seen here with the Head of State.
The highway will, it's hoped, relieve traffic congestion in the Nima/Maamobi area of northern Accra.
The area is at president such standard, and was described by Colonel Acheampong as being 'a blot on the prestige of Accra'. The redevelopment scheme includes plans for new blocks of flats, clinics, streets, schools, shops and playgrounds.
