- Story Text: Local traffic police said on Friday (May 28) that scores of tiny frogs have been on the move for the third day in a row, forcing authorities to open and close the main national east-west Ignatia highway at intervals to allow the frogs to pass.
On Friday morning less were spotted on the highway, near the city of Lagada in northern Greece, some 20 kilometres from Thessaloniki, but on Thursday a mass horde of thousands once again made their trek across the highway for a second day, frustrating traffic police who were hesitant to keep closing the busy highway.
Local scientists said the frogs are from the nearby Lake Koronia and will continue their migration for at least several days as part of a regular migration that happens during the hot summer weather in search of food.
Scientists also said the number was massive this year due to heavy rains during the winter at Koronia Lake that created the ideal conditions for reproduction. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
