- Story Text: Indonesia's surprise presidential loser Megawati
Sukarnoputri has easily won the consolation prize of the
vice-presidency as her supporters celebrated her win in the
streets.
Megawati's chief opponents -- military commander
General Wiranto and former ruling Golkar party head Akbar
Tandjung -- effectively handed her the win on Thursday
(October 21) when they quit the race at the last minute.
Of the 685 votes cast in the People's Consulative Assembly
(MPR), Megawati won 396 against 284 for her sole opponent
Hamzah Haz, head of the Moslem-backed United Development
Party.
It was Golkar's support that helped swing Wednesday's
(October 20) presidential vote in favour of frail Moslem
leader Abdurrahman Wahid at the expense of Megawati, the
pre-election favourite.
Lawmakers and crowds of journalists in balconies around
the parliament chamber cheered when parliament officials
announced Megawati's name when tallying the votes.
Normally little more than a ceremonial post in the past,
the vice-presidency has taken on crucial importance because of
Abdurrahman's poor health and his relatively weak power base.
Megawati, with her huge appeal among Indonesia's
impoverished masses, had appeared to have a lock on the
presidency, a job her father held at Indonesia's independence
in 1945.
Abdurrahman was present for Megawati's swearing-in at the
parliament.Among those who attended were former president
B.J.Habibie and diplomats.
Megawati's supporters meanwhile crowded open-air
food-stalls in Jakarta to watch the vote-counting broadcasted
live from the parliament.
They had done so on Wednesday (October 20), but to their
dismay, Megawati had lost to Abdurrahman Wahid in the contest
for the presidency.
Supporters also drove their vehicles around the Hotel
Indonesia circle, scene of riots on Wednesday.
