- Story Text: Leading businessmen from Ghana's major banks and trading firms were shown the ultra-modern factory of the New Ghana Match Factory in Accra on Friday (18 May).
The new factory, owned by the Ghana government, with a minority share held by a French company, Sifa, is an outgrowth of a match-making industry established in Kade in 1967, under the name of the Ghana Match Factory Corporation.
After a take-over last year, the business was split, with booklet matches for advertising purposes being produced at the original Kade plant and box safety matches for the home market being produced at the new Accra factory.
Producing 1,440 boxes of matches daily, the Accra factory cost 3.5 million codi (GBP1.2 million sterling, approx.) to build. It stands in the West Industrial area of Accra.
In addition to filling home market needs, the new plants is also providing the first of what are hoped to be large future exports to neighbouring nations.
The Kade factory already exports matches to Liberia, Niger and Mauritania, bringing a substantial income of foreign exchange.
