- Story Text: INTRO: There has been another eruption on Monserrat's Soufriere Hills volcano, renewing scientists' fears of a cataclysmic eruption.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Montserrat's Soufriere Hills volcano erupted again on Saturday (August 30) as scientists working on the Volcano Observatory on the island warned that the eruption could continue for another five years.
So far, experts said, the volume of material which the volcano has thrown up is only about a quarter of what could be expected.
A worst-case scenario would be a sudden, violent explosion which would also affect neighbouring islands and affect the global climate for up to two years. Such cataclysmic eruptions occur only once every hundreds of thousands of years, scientists say.
However, they say, it is also possible that it could quickly become inactive, though it could take up to 50 years before the ecology is fully restored.
The Soufriere Hills volcano came to life in 1995 after being dormant for centuries. There have been several major eruptions in the past two months.
