- Story Text: A U.S. transport company, Federal Express, made its inaugural flight into Subic Bay on Sunday (April 30), marking a new stage in the development of the former U.S. naval base.
A new Federal Express MD-11 aircraft touched down to a ceremonial welcome at Subic's former Cubi Point naval air station with Philippine President Fidel Ramos and Federal Express Chairman Fred Smith in attendance.
In a speech, Ramos hailed the opening of the new Subic Bay International airport as a landmark in Subic's transformation into a special economic development zone.
"We are determined to deliver but best of all, I think the message that we must project to the world as eagles according to Dick Gordon, is that we have done that we Filipinos have not only the capacity to do and the will to do but we also have already done just like Subic International airport." Ramos said.
The Americans pulled out of Subic, for generations home to a major part of the U.S. Pacific fleet, in 1992 after the Philippine Senate refused to ratify a new bases agreement.
Subic has since attracted some 700 million U.S. dollars in foreign investment commitments, making it a centrepiece of Ramos' drive to industrialise a nation left far behind its southeast Asian neighbours in terms of economic development.
Richard Gordon, head of the Subic Bay development project said the arrival of Fedex and the participation of other blue chips foreign companies in Cubi's upgrading to international airport status clearly demonstrated international confidence had returned to the Philippines.
The 40 million U.S. dollar upgrade involved civil engineering works to the apron and runway and the installation of navigational aids and advanced radar supplied by Westinghouse of the U.S. and Alcatel of Germany.
