- Story Text: Italian coach Dino Zoff expressed his admiration for
Turkey who surprised co-hosts Belgium 2-0 on Monday (June 19)
to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Euro 2000 soccer
championships.
Zoff's side won all their three matches in Group B,
but probably their toughest test came against Turkey in their
opening game on June 11 which Italy won 2-1 thanks to a
controversial penalty.
Zoff, speaking at a news conference in Geel, Belgium on
Tuesday (June 20), said:
"We found a Turkish team in the first game that was so
so," he said. "But then we saw how strong it really was. In
the first game we were surprised a bit, but then they
qualified. So they are adversaries to fear."
Turkey will meet Portugal in the quarter-finals in
Amsterdam, Netherlands on Saturday (June 24) while Italy will
meet either England, Romania or Germany in Brussels, Belgium
the same day.
