Summary:September 7 1940, the German air force - the Luftwaffe - opened the 57-day blitz on London. Some 350 bombers attacked the city. Severe damage was done to the London docks; some 400 people were killed and 1,400 injured. The raids were carried out, according to a Hitler communique, in reprisal for the Royal Air Force bombing of Berlin two days earlier. At this stage of World War II, Germany had occupied most of Europe and Britain stood alone.
