- Story Text: Some 750 right-wingers marched to Berlin's Tegel prison on Saturday (October 21), according to police, to demand the release of convicted German neo-Nazi Michael Regener, also known as "Lunikoff."
Regener is serving a more than 3-year sentence for membership in the neo-Nazi band "Landser" and for incitement of the people.
"Lunikoff" is said to be derived from a Russian vodka brand popular with supporters of the extreme right-wing scene.
Berlin authorities unsuccessfully tried to ban the march and instead called on Berliners to "show their disapproval."
Several hundred anti-Nazi protesters, some of them elderly people, also turned out to face the right-wingers and joined chants of "Nazis out!".
Residents along the route from Tegel underground station to the prison also hung banners from their balconies and windows reading "Nazis out."
Regener was first sentenced to a prison term by Berlin's superior court of justice.
In March 2005, the country's supreme court in the southern German city of Karlsruhe confirmed that verdict.
A public prosecutor at the time told reporters the "sole purpose of the rock band (Regener's "Landser") is to distribute the soundtrack of the Aryan revolution -- as the band says themselves," calling them a "criminal organisation." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
