- Story Text: Bling it on! Sari dresses and gowns with Indian beading and threadwork gave Marchesa's Spring 2013 runway show the look of a Bollywood movie set on Wednesday (September 12) at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) in New York.
The collection was dripping with royal embellishments - gold and silver beads, metallic threadwork, pearls, crystals and alabaster stones.
Anna Wintour, editor in chief of American Vogue, sat on the front row.
Designers Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman of New York-based Marchesa told Reuters TV about how they came up with the theme for their Spring 2013 collection.
"We were listening to the Beatles, and that led us to thinking about their visit to India in the '60s," Craig said.
"Yes, we were thinking about the '60s, and we were thinking about the impact on Western culture with Indian culture. And it was just an uplifting inspiration for the summer. It was like jewel colors. It lent itself well to embroideries, and it's just a bit of an upbeat collection for us," Chapman finished her partner.
A one-shoulder sari gown in maroon and silver brocade was just one example of Marchesa's vision of an elegant passage to India. A strapless gown in maroon tulle was accented with a hand-painted gold sari border.
A sari dress in hot pink tulle sparkled with silver beads and metallic embroidery on the bodice. The asymmetrical hem was typical of Marchesa's spring line.
Gold embellishment drew the eye to the shoulders and waistband of a sari cocktail dress in orange chiffon.
Marchesa brought out its first fragrance during New York fashion week.
"For us, we always wanted to do a fragrance. It was really when we found Sephora, we found the right partner. We were very, very excited to be launching our first perfume," Craig explained.
Chapman followed up her colleague.
"I think it's in the shops now, and we were just really thrilled, and we approached it very much how we would any collection. And we started with mood boards, we started with an idea behind it, and built it from there. It was a very interesting process."
Bare midriffs, a trend for Spring 2013, got the Bollywood treatment from Marchesa on gowns with lace or tulle insets at the waist. Cropped tops were paired with sheer pleated skirts.
Marchesa, often worn by actresses on the red carpet, showed one gown that had definite Oscar appeal: a strapless teal number with gold threadwork and paisley artwork on the torso.
When Craig and Chapman were asked about red-carpet trends for 2013, they said:
"Goodness, I don't know. Hopefully Marchesa."
Tyra Banks, TV host and model, is an avid fan.
"Oh yes, totally. I wore her to the TIME 100 most recently, the TIME 100 Most Influential People in the World evening. And I loved it. It was so glamorous, but actually super comfortable. Usually when you have on a gown, you're uncomfortable all night, you want to go home, you're dying. With her I am like, 'Wow. I feel so comfortable in her clothes, and it supported me, and I didn't have to wear a bra," Banks said about designer Chapman.
Power couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were among the celebrities attending the Marchesa runway show in Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
Singer Kelly Osbourne also came to the show.
