- Story Text: INTRO: Former world Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has been appearing before a disciplinary hearing of the sport's governing body, the FIA, accused of dangerous driving.
The charges against Schumacher at the hearing west of London on Tuesday (November 11) arose because of his collision with Jacques Villeneuve during the 1997 European Grand Prix and Formula One drivers' championship decider at Jerez.
The German, who led the championship race by one point going into the final race, appeared to some people to try to take the Canadian off the track with him as he crashed out.
But Villeneuve finished the race and became world champion.
Schumacher says the collision was a mistake. He risks being fined and banned for one or more grands prix next season if found guilty of dangerous driving.
The Williams and McLaren teams were also appearing at a separate disciplinary hearing at the same venue, accused of collusion.
McLaren allegedly agreed to help Williams' driver Villeneuve win the world title during the final race.
In return, once the crown was in sight, it is claimed that Villeneuve let the McLarens of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard through on the final lap to finish ahead of him in first and second places respectively.
McLaren and Williams say the accusations are false.
