- Story Text: Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, at Sen Francisco Sept 21, threw security police into confusion when he waived a well-planned morning's programme in favour of his own arrangements to see the harbour and visit the Longshoremen's Union, before touring I.B.M. plant at San Jose and calling in at a supermarket.
After a trip around San Francisco bay end harbour on board a coast guard cutter, during which he told the captain that Russia was cutting the number of her cruisers by 90% in favour of submarines, torpedo hosts and minesweepers, Khrushchev paid a second visit to the Longshoremen's Union Hell, where he addressed a crowd as "comrades" and was given a very cordial welcome. Open earlier visit he was too late for the longshoremen's morning assignment meeting, and left disappointed after finding only one employee there who told him: "We wish you peace".
Later, the Soviet leader drove 50 miles from San Francisco to the International Business Machine computer plant near Sen Jose, where he had lunch at the works cafeteria with several hundred employees. He served himself in the same way as the workers and then, in a conciliatory speech, thanked his hosts.
On his way back to San Francisco, Khrushchev, called in at a typical American supermarket in Stonestown shopping centre. During his inspection of various goods - reminiscent of Mr. Mikoyan recent visit - the Soviet Premier showed particular interest in...plastic-wrapped apples. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
