- Story Text: Polish coach Leo Beenhakker blamed mistakes of players on Monday (June 9) for losing 2:0 in the match with Germany in the first match of Group B in the Euro 2008 football championships in Klagenfurt on Sunday (June 8).
"The conclusion is again that sometimes it's based on individual mistakes, its part of football, I know but it always hurts, of course. If an opponent scores a goal as consequence of great play, than you can live with it but in this way I think if you see the goals back we made two very personal mistakes." Beenhakker said, looking visibly concerned.
"I think in general that I recognize that Germany in certain parts of the game was playing very well. I think that Poland in this way played one of it's better games, and in the end I have to say that probably they were too good for us." he added.
Sunday's Group B 2-0 victory for Germany, who have never lost to their neighbours, hinged to a large extent on Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo deciding that Lukas Podolski's opening goal should stand despite Polish claims of offside.
Ovrebo then made the reverse decision, similarly marginal, denying striker Ebi Smolarek an equaliser just after the hour. Podolski, who was born in Poland, went on to rub salt into the wounds with his 72nd minute second. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
