- Story Text: Thai police have said they have seized their largest
haul of the illegal party drug ecstasy, confiscating some
62,000 pills and arresting two Singaporean men and an
Indonesian on drug-trafficking charges.
Thailand, battling a flood tide of methamphetamine or
speed pills commonly used by Thai youngsters, says ecstasy use
is also on the rise.
Thai anti-narcotics officials said tip-offs from Swiss and
British agents led to the arrest of two men, identified as
Hasan, a 41-year-old Indonesian and Singaporean Tee Chong Lim,
24, at a Bangkok hotel on Thursday (October 31).
Another Singaporean, Seo Seng Nan, 43, was later arrested
at Bangkok International airport after arriving from Hamburg
via Zurich with a stash of pills in a travel case.
The three men were presented to the media on Friday
(November 1).
If found guilty by a Thai court, all three face a maximum
penalty of death by firing squad. Anti-narcotics officials
said they believed the three men belonged to the same group of
traffickers as a Singaporean man arrested in a hotel in the
town of Hat Yai, 1,340 km (840 miles), south of Bangkok with
20,250 ecstasy pills in August.
Thai officials said ecstasy manufactured in Europe had
become more popular than Asian-made ecstasy because of its
higher quality. They said the number of cases and amount of
pills intercepted had increased by 12-fold in the past five
years.
Police seized 72,182 ecstasy pills in 2000, compared to
5,920 in 1998, police sources said.
