- Story Text: Peruvian film fans lined up outside a Lima movie theatre on Wednesday (January 10) to catch a glimpse of some of South American's big stars for the premiere of the new film "My Brother's Wife."
The new movie, based on a book by Peruvian writer Jaime Bayly stars Uruguayan-born Barbara Mori, Peruvian heartthrob Christian Meier, and Chile's Beto Cuevas, more famous as the lead singer of rock group La Ley.
"My Brother's Wife" (La Mujer de mi Hermano) tells the story Zoe, a woman who, after ten years of a passionless marriage, becomes embroiled with her husband's brother. With the key elements of passion, revenge, and plenty of secrecy, the tale of this bizarre love triangle plays out.
The movie, the first full length feature from Ricardo de Montreiul, has come under fire for using Mexican slang, divorcing it from its Peruvian origins. But according to its Peruvian star Christian Meier, it is hoped that the movie will show the world how Peruvian cinema is developing.
"It's a movie that was made with a lot of affection, which many Peruvians participated in, and I (hope) that (in other countries) they see what we are currently doing in cinema in Peru," he told journalists at a press conference at the premiere.
For writer Jaime Bayly, the performances by a cast of Latin American actors are exceptional.
"The performances are outstanding, they are really good, very refined in capturing the characters' moral ambiguity," he said.
Singer turned actor Beto Cuevas said he enjoyed both acting and singing, and refused to choose one or the other as he was commended on his debut performance.
"Thanks for the great actor thing, I think that I still have a long way to go," he told journalists.
Director Ricardo de Montreiul is best-known for directing music videos for artists including Nicole, Plastilina Mosh and Libido. Many of his videos have been nominated for the South by Southwest music festival and at the MTV Video Music Awards. He has also directed TV advertisements.
