- Story Text: Without the desire for power, the world would be free of corruption, Latin rock legend and multi-Grammy award winner Carlos Santana told fans in Peru on Tuesday (March 21).
More than 25,000 people packed into the capital Lima's Monumental Stadium on Tuesday to watch the guitar great perform for more than four hours. The 58-year-old Santana told fans and journalists on Monday (March 20) that pacifism showed greater bravery than violence.
"I have changed but in some things I am still the same, I love to talk of things of spiritual things, but still I have the picture of war against corrupt politics and corrupt religion, the Woodstock generation didn't want the war in Vietnam, it takes more worth to point a flower in a bayonet," he said.
The guitarist and also transcendentalist meditator told fans his purpose in life was to spread peace.
"My motive is to resist George Bush, be different to him," he added.
Santana arrived on Sunday (March 19) in the city to give a concert promoting his recent single 'All that I Am' ('Todo lo que soy'). He has already played Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
Born in 1947 in Autlan de Navarra in Mexico, Santana has sold more than 80 million records becoming legendary for his fusion of salsa, blues and jazz. He dismisses comparisons with other rock legends saying the Latino blood makes the distinction.
"It is very different to the Rolling Stone or U2, like any people in Latin America, our music has a lot of fibre, our music has a lot of vibe, even thought I am 58 years old," declared the devout follower of Sri Chinmoy, the transcendental meditation guru who renamed the guitarist Devadip Carlos Santana.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements in music, Santana was awarded the Medal of Lima City on Monday Mayor Luis Castaneda.
Santana came from a musical family, his father was a Mexican Mariachi violinist taught his son to play until he was eight. In 1999 Santana and his band released 'Supernatural', an explosively successful album featuring stars like Wyclef Jean, Eric Clapton and Lauryn Hill. He won 9 Grammy awards and three Latin grammies and sold more than 25 million copies of the album.
