- Story Text: Holder of the most Guinness World Records, Ashrita Furman, becomes the faster skipper, but failed to skip along with a tiger on a leash. Ashrita Furman, who holds the most Guinness world records, has added yet another superlative to his list after he became the world's fastest skipper on Sunday (February 4).
The 53-year-old American from New York skipped five kilometres in 35 minutes and 19 seconds at Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi province, some 150 kilometers west of Thailand's capital.
A 6-year-old male tiger named "Hurn Fha," which means Sky Flyer, was selected from the 18 tigers raised by the temple, to accompany and to highlight Furman's attempt to break the record.
Furman skipped the first 100 meters with Hurn Fha on a leash.
"The road is very rough so my feet are getting really hot, it also going up hill in one direction and that really made it tough, but anyway I'm happy with the first attempt, I have to make it within 40 minutes and this is well under, so I'm very happy," said Furman, who is currently traveling through Thailand.
At the final 100 meters, Furman and tiger keepers tried to push Hurn Fha to the finish line. When the tired tiger refused, Furman gave up and skipped to the finish line alone.
"I saw he didn't want to go any further and I don't want to force him, because skipping supposed to be fun and so the tiger didn't want to be fun so it's okay we skipped enough," he said.
Ashrita, who currently holds 56 records listed in the Guinness database, has attempted or set other records involving animals. In 2005 he held onto a small dog while setting a record in Edinburgh for the most jumps on a pogo stick in a minute. Last year he attempted to break the underwater juggling record in an aquarium in Kuala Lumpur, but failed when a 4-meter shark bumped into him and knocked the balls out of his hands.
Furman has broken records on all 7 continents and in more than 30 countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
