- Story Text: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev holds talks with Peruvian leader at start of Latin American tour that will also take him to Brazil, Venezuela and Cuba.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev began his state visit to Peru on Monday (November 24, 2008) as accusations flew from Georgia that Russian soldiers opened fire on a convoy carrying the Georgian and Polish presidents.
Medvedev was welcomed by a military honor guard to Lima's presidential palace, where he held talks with Peruvian President Alan Garcia.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is accompanying Medvedev in Peru, denied any Russian responsibility in the incident on Sunday, claiming it was a "provocation" from the Georgian side.
Russia intervened in Georgia in August to repel a Georgian bid to retake breakaway South Ossetia from pro-Moscow separatists.
Medvedev is expected to address the Peruvian Congress on Monday afternoon. The Russian leader also attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit over the weekend in Lima, and will head to Brazil, Venezuela and Cuba later this week.
The week-long visit is part of a bid to step up ties with Latin America as relations with the west and particularly the United States have soured, particularly after the west's condemnation Russia's invasion of Georgia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
