- Story Text: Maximo Altez, the lawyer for convicted murderer Joran van der Sloot, confirmed on Wednesday (May 14) that the Dutch citizen is set to wed a Peruvian woman.
Van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year sentence in a Peruvian prison for the 2010 murder of university student Stephany Flores.
Altez said the couple is waiting for the court to confirm a date for the civil ceremony.
"We are waiting for a date because they select a date for the marriage of Mr. Joran Van der Sloot to Ms. Leydi Carol Figueroa Uceda", said the defense lawyer.
"We have already complied with all of the requisites for the marriage which involves presenting personal documents for both people such as birth certificate, passport or national identity documents, medical exams, and once we have complied with all these requisites the court will give us a date and time so that they can go to the Ancon municipality's Civil Registry to get married," added Altez.
The announcement comes just months after Peru passed a law agreeing to extradite Joran van der Sloot to the United States, but only after he first completes his 28-year sentence in Peru.
Van de Sloot is wanted in the U.S. for questioning about the high-profile disappearance of an American teenager, Natalee Holloway, who was last seen with van der Sloot and another man in Aruba in 2005.
Some worry that if van der Sloot marries a Peruvian and is granted Peruvian citizenship, a future extradition to the United States could be complicated.
Van der Sloot's lawyer, however, said his client was only marrying for love.
"Joran is getting married plain and simply because he is in love and that is it. There are no other hidden interests in this act," said Altez.
He also announced that the couple is expecting a child.
"Currently his partner is five months pregnant and it is expected that she will give birth at the end of September. This is what she has told me and I think it is going to be a boy," he said.
The U.S. has requested van der Sloot's extradition for allegedly extorting money from Holloway's family in exchange for information on the whereabouts of her body, which has never been found.
Holloway was in Aruba celebrating her high school graduation with classmates. Her disappearance and the unsolved case have been closely followed by U.S. media. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
