- Story Text: A Dutch national has won the title of Miss Spring in a
beauty contest held in a women's detention centre in the
Peruvian capital, Lima.
Nicole Boss, an 18 year-old prisoner awaiting a
sentence on drug trafficking, was crowned Miss Spring on
Thursday (September 23), after defeating seventeen other
inmate contestants during a beauty contest at the all-women's
detention centre.
The uncommon event is sponsored by the National
Penitentiary Institute, and has entered its sixth year, with
more and more inmates adding their names to the list of
aspiring contestants.
The event was open to the media, given the mixture of
nationalities represented.Among the participants were
Spanish, Dominican, South Africans and two women from the
Netherlands.
The contestants donned elegant evening wear, donated by
various fashion houses.
Contestants had make-up and hair styling services provided
by other inmates who have been trained as part of their
rehabilitation program.
Boss said she never expected to win first place as she
felt there were "very beautiful" women competing in the event.
Second place went to Peruvian national, Carito Shader, who
has been serving a sentence for the same crime as Boss.
Most of the women detained at the centre are serving
sentences related to drug trafficking. Most of them had been
hired to transport drugs out of Peru to different countries
around the world.
