Summary:Three months after its attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941 Japanese forces had swept down through South East Asia and the Pacific Islands. Singapore had fallen. Australia was threatened with invasion. In Burma the Japanese pushed the British right back to the Indian frontier. More than three years of Jungle fighting and a stubborn defence of the frontier itself were to follow before the invaders were driven back. In the Pacific, the American began to gain the initiative after the battle of Midway. Their capture of the Marianas in 1944 gave them a vital strategic air base. In 1945 with the capture of Iwo Jima, then Okinawa the Allies were closing in on Japan. Japanese resistance was fantastically courageous. Suicide pilots in planes loaded with explosives dived to their deaths on targets.
