Summary:The United States was forced into the war by the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Three hundred and fifty Japanese aircraft raided the American naval base in Hawaii, crippling the pacific fleet. The US lost 18 warships in two hours and nearly 4,000 men. The US Congress declared war on Japan together with Germany and Italy as Japan's allies in the Berlin-Tokyo-Rome axis declared war on the US.
