- Story Text: A huge crowd watched as two United States divers broke world high-diving records on April 6. Lucy Wardle dived from a height of 120 feet to smash the previous mark set by her compatriot Debi Beachel at 109 feet 4 inches. Beachel's record dive was made in Rome in October 1982. Randy Dickison broke the men's record with a dive from 174 feet, three feet higher than the record he jointly held with his compatriots Bruce Boccia, Dana Kunze, David Lindsay and Rick Winters. Unfortunately, however, he injured his leg in the dive and had to be carried away on a stretcher. The dives were made into a pool 20 ft deep, 175 ft long and 60 ft wide. Engineers have estimated that a female diver will be travelling at 76 mph (about 120 kph) when she hits the water, and a male diver at a speed of 92 mph (about 160 kph), with possible variations due to the prevailing winds.
